History-

Once upon a time, in a prosperous kingdom, there were two children born to the throne, a prince and princess.  The crown prince was a brilliant young man, with a promising future and a bright heart.  He loved his family dearly, and doted especially upon his younger, more timid sister Esmé, whom he loved more than anything else.

However, it is unfortunate for him, that the rest of his family also loved young Esmé so much, as she was given attention to the point where the bright young man was neglected.  Still, the young man thrived.  He was a blessed individual indeed, and found much pleasure in the fact that he would be able to take the throne one day, and protect both sister and kingdom from harm, and sought education and training to this end.

However, that day was not to come.  The king and queen, so enamored with young Esmé, had it in their minds that it was not their son that deserved the throne, but their precious daughter.  And to this end, they conspired against their son.

Wrongfully charged with the death of two castle servants, the prince fled the castle with nothing more than the clothes on his back, a letter left beneath his sister's door: "No matter the distance, No matter the circumstances, No matter the cost, I will watch over you and protect you, my beloved Esmé.  -Modeste."

In the five years since these events, the distant nephew of a retired swordsman has risen through the ranks of the King's army.  He has distinguished himself on the front lines of battle repeatedly, and has also turned down several promotions.  He is a steadfast defender of the crown's honor, allowing none to besmirch the royal family's honor.  Most recently, he finally accepted an offer: Promotion to the position of squire beneath a well-connected knight, who is rumored to be a special agent of the throne.  He has met none so far who know his true identity, or at least, if they do, they do not reveal him for who he was.

Meanwhile, rumors circulate of both the king's poor health, as well as the Queen's recent suicide.  It is only a matter of time they say, before Esmé is crowned as ruler.  Many would oppose the rule of Esmé, as she has garnered a reputation of cruelty and jealousy, using her influence to take what she wants, and harm those she dislikes.

What does the future hold for these individuals, the knight who was prince, and the queen ascendant?
